Don’t miss the Colorful Chualluma

Perched high in the steep slopes of La Paz you will see the most colorful suburb. In contrast to the red brick colors that dominate the hills of La Paz, the suburb of Chualluma stands out and should be discovered!

Chuallama is the result of a local community artwork and infrastructure project. Guided by lead urban artist Knorke Leaf in 2019, local artists painted these beautiful colorful murals to gentrify the area. Their efforts made Chuallama the most colorful suburb in La Paz! Workers also improved the infrastructure of the area by adding cement staircases and steel railings. This allowed locals and tourist to traverse the steep slopes with more ease.

Experience Colorful Murals with Amazing Views

Enter the suburb on the intersection of Uta Pulpera and Segundo Vascones streets. Here you will see a staircase with colorful buildings either side. This marks the starts of your visit to the most colorful suburb in La Paz! From here just explore the streets around the area as there are several murals waiting to be found!

Exploring further on some streets you will find superb viewpoints to see the city of La Paz, Huyana Potosi and the majestic Illimani. Just take your time as there will be stairs to climb, a bit of a challenge with the 3800m altitude. But it’s very much worth it. The Chuallama experience offers an opportunity to chill and relax away from the busy city center of La Paz. It also offers insights into the daily life of the locals and as well interactions with La Paz’s friendly street dogs!

Allow a 2-hour stay to fully immerse yourself in this genuine Bolivian Travel Experience. There are plenty of great photo opportunities to be had. While we were visiting a couple were getting their wedding photos taken here so it’s popular with the locals as well!

How to Get to the Most Colorful Suburb in La Paz

The best way to get to Chualluma is to get on the red line teleferico at Central Station. You could also come down on the teleferico from El Alto at 16 de Julio station. From either direction you need to get off at Cemetario station on the Red Line. Exit the station and get a taxi to Uta Pulpera and Segundo Vascones streets. Expect to pay 20 bs or thereabouts. You could walk but it’s a steep climb so it’s up to you.

Once you’ve finished your visit you have the option of walking back to the Cemetario station. Since it’s all downhill it will be an easier walk. From here you can continue your La Paz travel adventure on the teleferico red line. From here consider going to El Alto markets if it’s Thursday or Sunday. Or you could return to the Central area of La Paz.
