Make way to the Valle de las Animas!

Another outstanding natural experience La Paz has to offer is the Valle de las Animas. Located in the suburb of Ovejuyo in the outskirts of La Paz, this outstanding natural site will captivate you with its beauty and grandeur. Its natural mud-rock glacial-formed spires and contrasting colors of the landscape will provide an unforgettable hiking experience. It’s very worth the effort to travel here and experience the amazing natural formations and sensational views to boot!

How to get yourself to the Valle de las Animas

There are various forms of public transport that can get you to the Valle de las Animas. However, the most economical way would be to take the Puma Katari bus. These buses originate from Plaza Camacho in the central part of La Paz. Look for the bus that says ‘Chasquipampa’ and take it to the end of the route ‘Parada 63’. Ask the driver ‘Va a parar en la calle 63?’. It costs 2.50 bs for each person. It will take some time as the bus stops often along the route.

Once you have arrived in calle 63 in Ovejuyo, there are stores where you can buy food and drinks if required. Once you are ready, go straight ahead on Avenue Munoz Reyes then take the first left on Arenal street. Follow Arenal street until you reach the entrance which will look like the photo below.

What to Expect at the Entrance

Expect to be charged in order to enter the Valle de las Animas. Since the site is on private property, usually on arrival a local resident will come out and speak to you. Expect to be charged anywhere from 5 to 20 bs each person. Once you have permission, start your journey into the Valle de las Animas! The initial pathway is straightforward, just follow the track to the side of the valley as it continues to climb.

Your Outstanding Natural Experience!

Make your way up the valley to experience the mud spires in their magnificence, grandeur and scale. The valley slopes upwards so it will be a bit challenging to hike considering the high altitude. But it is well within the reach of people with average fitness, so don’t worry! Along with the memorizing mud spires, this place will give you a sense of peace and quietness. Being out of the hustle and bustle of La Paz, the Valle de las Animas presents an opportunity to relax, unwind and make a deep connecting to the natural world.

This hike also presented an opportunity to use my DJ Mini 3 drone to record some amazing footage! We were able to get a different perspective of the mud spires than from just the ground. The drone also provided greater viewing reach, being able to see the wider scenery including the city of La Paz! These types of drones are lightweight and super portable. I strongly recommend if you have a drone to bring it along to record your outstanding natural experience!
