Moon Valley: The best nature experience in La Paz

The best nature experience in La Paz is located just a 30-minute drive from the central tourist area. Moon Valley (Valle de la Luna) is Bolivia’s most surreal and captivating landscape and it’s very worth it to come here. Arriving here feels like you’re on the moon itself. Apparently the first man on the moon Neil Armstrong visited here. He commented that the landscape was eerily similar to what he experienced on the moon! Hence the site was named the Valle de la Luna.

The valley is a maze of bizarre rock formations and deep canyons sculpted by centuries of erosion. The jagged spires and deep crevices, formed from ancient clay and sandstone, create a lunar-like terrain that contrasts sharply with the surrounding Andean mountains. Intertwined between the surreal landscape is a well-marked path with wooden handrails and signs indicating the names of various formations.

The Best Nature Experience: What’s it Like?

As you wander among the rocky formations, you’ll encounter unique geological features, including formations known as “fairy chimneys” and “erosion towers,” which seem to defy the laws of nature. Great photo opportunities can be had whilst hiking the path!

Along the hike you will encounter many in the clay formations themselves but also in the surrounding landscapes. The circuit has many interesting plants such as Cactuses to view and study as well. Personally, this is what I liked most about the Valle de la Luna!

The hike itself is not overly strenuous or difficult. There are two circuits available. A shorter circuit which takes about 20 minutes. The other longer circuit takes 45 minutes to an hour. It offers the best lookout views and photo opportunities. Most people should be able to compete both circuits with an average level of fitness. Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours here. Just bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, hiking shoes and some water. There are also food and drink store near the entrance if you need some supplies!

How to get here

There are various ways to get to the Valley of the Moon. Depending on where you are staying in La Paz, the efficient way to get here is to get on the Teleferico Green line. The Yellow and Blue lines connect with the Green line. Keep going until it terminates at Irpavi Station. From here go out and get a taxi to the Valle de la Luna. The price should be 25bs or as close as possible. Stand firm and make sure you don’t get overcharged. If you are a foreigner, they will try so just be aware of this.

You could also get a taxi from wherever you are in La Paz, but you will have to pay more for the privilege. Another option is taking a trufi (shared minibus) but it will take more time and be cramped. Not recommended if you are tall.

Who should come here?

Whether you’re a photographer, a nature enthusiast, or simply someone in search of tranquility, Valle de la Luna is a must-visit destination when in La Paz. Its stunning landscape offers a unique opportunity to connect with the natural world in one of the most extraordinary settings Bolivia has to offer.

If you’re looking to explore a place that feels truly out of this world, Valle de la Luna is a journey you won’t soon forget. It’s the best nature experience in La Paz. Do come here, it’s worth it!
