The highest freshwater lake in the world!

Perched on the Southern end of Lake Titicaca at 3841m above sea level, the highest freshwater lake in the world, the beautiful Copacabana is a relaxing gateway to discovering Lake Titicaca and the Isla del Sol. This chilled town has several sites to offer and is a good break from the hustle of La Paz.

Relax along the Shore

A relaxing gateway to Lake Titicaca

Start your discovery of Copacabana by taking a stroll along the shore of Lake Titicaca. Here you find many boats moored to their jetties ready for their departures onto the lake. You will find many restaurants along the shore, selling fish meals from Lake Titicaca such as trout and other species. These plates of food from personal experience are very tasty and healthy. There are restaurants are associated with hotels located close to the shore.

Visit Basilica de la Virgen de Copacabana

Just a short walk from the shore lies the Basilica de la Virgen de Copacabana, a beautiful 17th century Spanish Colonial construction. Built in 1679, this renaissance styled Basilica celebrates the Virgen de Copacabana. She is proclaimed as the patron saint of Bolivia.

Cerro Calvario

Perched up high above Copacabana lies Cerro Calvario, a series of stone constructed crosses overlooking Copacabana and Lake Titicaca. It’s tough climb it’s absolutely worth it. The views on offer are spectacular. We would highly recommend going around Sunset. Enter from Calle San Antonio which becomes the trail to the top.

Floating Islands

A short 20-minute boat trip from Copacabana will take you to the man-made floating islands, ‘Isla Flotantes’. They are constructed out of a plant known as ‘totora’ which grows on Lake Titicaca itself. Here on these artificial Islands local people work and live their daily lives. On the Islands there are restaurants where you can catch your own fish to eat you wish.

Whilst your fish is being prepared, you definitely should enter the shore and explore around the Islands. There are some short walks which offer great views of Lake Titicaca and the Floating Islands themselves.

Zip-Line Fun and La Boca Del Sapo

Another activity close to Copacabana is a Zip-line offering sensational views of Lake Titicaca. We both did this and was a whole lot of fun! We used Zipline Copacabana which you can find located on Avenue 6 de Agosto. Cost was 50bs per person. A van will take you to the Zip-line location which is a 15-minute drive. From here you will be given a safety brief. Then you will be hooked up to the Zipline and be ready for a great Bolivian Travel Experience!

Zip-Line Start Copacabana

At the bottom of the Zip-Line once you can take a relaxing stroll towards Copacabana. It’s not far to Copacabana, a 30-minute walk. Along the way you will come across ‘La Boca del Sapo’ or the Toads mouth. It’s a natural rock formation in the shape of the mouth of a “Toad”. It’s a great place to take photos of Lake Titticaca. Also, you can have a traditional “Ch’alla” ceremony performed (at a small cost) by a ‘Chaman’. This ceremony is said to bring great abundance for those that receive it.
